Golf photo ideas for your next round

By · Updated · 4 min read

Good golf photos come from the details around the swing as much as from the swing itself. Shoot the first tee, the bag, a shadow on the fairway, the flag in the wind, your playing partner, and finish with the scorecard or a hole card. Low morning or evening light helps every one of them.

What golf photos are worth taking?

A round of golf lasts four hours or more and has a natural story: the car park, the first tee, a run of holes, the turn, the finish. You do not need a perfect swing. A good set mixes scenes, people and details, and the best ones show what it felt like to be there.

Twenty golf photo ideas

  • The bag leaning against the cart before the round.
  • The scorecard and a pencil on the first tee.
  • A tee with a ball, close up.
  • The first drive from behind.
  • A fairway shot from the tee, showing the hole.
  • The flag in wind on a green.
  • A long shadow across the fairway in low sun.
  • Your partner reading a putt.
  • A putt on the lip of the hole.
  • A bunker rake pattern.
  • Dew on the grass in the morning.
  • The yardage marker and the club in hand.
  • A water hazard with a reflection.
  • Shoes on the first cut of rough.
  • A group laughing on the tee.
  • A drink at the turn.
  • Clouds building over the back nine.
  • A putter against the clubhouse wall.
  • The final green at dusk.
  • The card with the final score.

Where should you stand for a swing?

Down the line, behind the golfer, shows the path of the club and the target. Face on, from the side, shows posture and the finish. Stay well outside the player's line of sight, stay still while they address the ball, and never use a shutter sound on a quiet tee. Turn the shutter sound off in settings. DEUCE has switches for shutter sound and haptics.

How do you use light on a course?

Early morning and late evening give long shadows and soft color. The hours near sunrise and sunset suit fairway shots, since grass contrast grows and the sky is warm. At midday the sun is high and harsh, so shoot details in shade, like the ball in the rough or a flag against a blue sky. Overcast days flatten the green but give clean, even skin tones for portraits.

The golden hour guide covers the camera settings for low light.

Which lens suits which golf scene?

These match the four lenses in the DEUCE camera, but the same logic works with any phone.

SceneLensWhy
Whole hole from the tee24 mmWide view of the fairway
Swing from behind35 to 55 mmNatural proportions
Flag far away85 mmBrings the green closer
Putt close up35 mmIncludes grass and cup

How do you make a golf hole card?

DEUCE has a Golf collection of stencils with fields for course, hole, par, distance, hole score, totals, and counts of birdies, pars and bogeys. Pick a photo of the hole, choose a hole card stencil in the Design tab, and fill in what you want. Every field is optional, so you can leave out the score on a bad day. The details are in stencils and carousels.

How do you build a round into a post?

  1. Pick six to ten frames from the round.
  2. Apply one film to all frames so the set looks like one roll.
  3. Start with a wide shot of the course and end with a card.
  4. Build a carousel in a 4:5 ratio.
  5. Export with location off if the post is public.

What film look suits a golf course?

Greens react strongly to color grading. A warm look can turn grass yellow, and a cool one can make it blue. Pick a look that keeps the grass natural and warms the light instead. Check the greens first when you compare two films in the film catalog. Lower the intensity if the grass turns an odd color.

How do you photograph a putt?

Get low and shoot from the side or from behind the ball along the line. A wide lens near the grass shows the cup and the golfer in one frame. Wait until the player has finished the stroke before you move. A slow putt is a rare chance for a clean, sharp action shot, because the club moves slowly compared with a drive.

What about weather and color?

Mist in the morning softens the distance and adds depth. Overcast days give gentle light for portraits. Wind helps you show movement in flags and clothes. After rain, puddles on a green or a cart path act as mirrors. Check the sky in the weather app and plan to shoot something different in each condition.

How do you photograph friends without interrupting the game?

  1. Take photos while others are walking or waiting, not during swings.
  2. Keep your phone in a pocket or on the cart between shots.
  3. Use the quick access shortcut to open the camera in one gesture.
  4. Ask the group once if they mind photos, then relax.
  5. Share the set after the round, not during it.

Which edits suit golf photos?

Use a look that keeps greens natural and adds warmth to the light. Lift shadows a bit under caps, pull highlights down for white shirts and balls, and add a touch of grain. Black and white works well for the first tee in mist or a dusk finish. See the photo editor for the tools and black and white photos on iPhone for a mono workflow.

How do you photograph the course without people?

Empty courses make strong images, especially early. Look for leading lines: a cart path curving to a green, a fairway edge, a row of trees. Use a wide lens low to the ground, and put the horizon on a third. Tiny figures in the distance give scale. Shoot a few frames at different exposures if the sky is bright. A quiet photo of the course often becomes the cover of a post.
