Light leaks in film photography: what they are and how to use them
A light leak is a streak or wash of color on a film photo caused by stray light reaching the film where it should not. It usually looks red, orange or yellow. Photographers once saw it as a defect. Today many add the look on purpose, in small doses.

What is a light leak?
A light leak is unwanted exposure of film. Light finds a gap, such as a worn seal around the back door of a camera, and exposes part of the roll before or after the picture. The result is a band, streak or fog of color along one edge, often warm because the light passes through the film's back layers or the camera body.
What causes light leaks?
- Worn foam light seals around the camera back, which crumble with age.
- A camera back opened before the film was rewound.
- Cracked bellows or loose film door latches.
- Film left in a bright place before development.
- Damaged film canisters.
Why does it look red or orange?
Color film has layers sensitive to blue, green and red light. Light leaking from the camera back usually reaches the layers in a way that records warm tones. When the leak is strong the whole edge turns hot orange, and when it is weak you get a pink or amber haze. The exact color depends on the film, the leak and the lighting.
Why do photographers like the look?
Because it shows that a real object made the picture. A leak is a mark of chance: no two are the same, and you cannot plan it. It also adds warmth at the edge of the frame and draws the eye inward. For a sports picture, a little leak on a corner of a sunny court photo feels like a photo from a Sunday roll.
Used too often, the look becomes a trick. Treat it as seasoning.
How do you add a light leak to a digital photo?
- Pick a photo with a calm corner or edge where the leak can sit.
- Open your editor's effects and choose a light leak.
- Set the strength so the glow stays at the edge.
- Check that the leak does not cover faces or the ball.
- Lower the strength until the leak is a hint.
How does DEUCE handle light leaks?
DEUCE offers eight light leaks in Effects, along with flash bloom, window light, soft flare, dust, scratches, film gate, scanner, print texture, haze, glass, prism, lens softness, CCD glow, direct flash, a timestamp and a REC overlay. The app limits how many effects you can stack, with a note that too many at once stops being film. Ready combinations such as Night court, The lab and Direct flash give you a starting point.
Details of the tool groups are in the photo editor guide.
How do light leaks relate to halation?
The two are often confused. Read what halation is for the second one.
| Light leak | Halation | |
|---|---|---|
| Cause | Stray light entering the camera | Light bouncing inside the film |
| Where | Edge or random area | Around bright highlights |
| Color | Red, orange, yellow | Warm glow, often red |
| Control | Random | Depends on the scene |
Which photos suit a light leak?
Good candidates are sunlit scenes with a quiet edge: a court in afternoon sun, a golf cart at dusk, a portrait on a terrace. Avoid photos with detail in every corner, or ones where you need precise color, since the leak shifts it. Black and white frames also take leaks well, because the leak adds a warm tone to the mono scale.
How much is too much?
If you notice the leak before you notice the subject, it is too strong. Aim for a result that people feel before they identify it. Check the photo at thumbnail size: a strong leak at thumbnail size reads as a big orange block.
Can you cause a light leak on purpose with a film camera?
Some photographers do. They open the back of the camera slightly in the dark, expose the roll to a brief burst of light, or leave a gap in the seals. The result is unpredictable and sometimes ruins the roll, so serious photographers do it with a spare roll. Other cameras, such as many cheap plastic models, leak by design, which is part of why they have a following.
Do not try this with a roll that matters. A digital imitation gives you the same look and a way to undo it.
How do disposable cameras relate to light leaks?
Disposable cameras have cardboard and plastic bodies with simple seals, so leaks happen more often than in metal cameras. The look became tied to the format: flash, grain and a stray orange edge. If you want that style, read about the disposable camera look on iPhone. A leak is one ingredient among several, and flash and grain matter as much.
What other film flaws are common?
DEUCE includes dust, scratches, film gate and scanner in its Effects tab, along with the eight light leaks.
| Flaw | What it is | Typical look |
|---|---|---|
| Dust and scratches | Particles and marks on the negative or scanner | White specks and lines |
| Film gate marks | Edges of the frame area | Dark rectangle around the picture |
| Fade | Dyes losing contrast with age | Low contrast, lifted blacks |
| Light leak | Stray light on the film | Warm streaks at the edge |
How do you make a leak look natural?
- Choose a leak whose color matches the light of the scene: warm for sunset, softer for overcast.
- Place it where it meets an edge or corner, never in the middle of the frame.
- Keep a bit of the picture's own highlights visible through it.
- Pair with a modest amount of grain, so the two blend.
- Skip it on the one photo of the set you care about most.
How do you check a light leak at the right size?
Look at the photo as a small thumbnail, then on a full screen. A leak that looks gentle on a big screen can fill the whole thumbnail with orange, and viewers in a feed see the thumbnail first. Move it toward a corner, lower its strength and test again. If your set of photos all carry leaks in the same corner, mix the positions, so the set does not look stamped.
Do light leaks work on black and white?
Yes, and many photographers like them there. A warm streak across a black and white frame adds a single color accent, which feels like an old print that was stored in a bright room. Keep the amount low, because the contrast between grey and orange is strong. In DEUCE, you can add a leak to any film look and hold back the effect with the same controls you use for the other effects.
Frequently asked questions
What causes a light leak on film?
Stray light entering through worn seals, an opened camera back, or damaged film canisters.
Why are light leaks orange?
The color layers in film respond to the leaking light in a way that records warm tones, so streaks look red, orange or yellow.
Can I add a light leak on iPhone?
Yes. DEUCE has eight light leaks in its Effects tab, and you control how many you stack.
Is a light leak the same as lens flare?
No. Flare comes from light scattering inside a lens, and a leak comes from light reaching the film itself.
How can I keep a light leak subtle?
Place it at an edge, lower the strength, and check the photo at thumbnail size.
